How the game works
I swiped and everyone moved. Is that a bug?
No — that is the whole game. One swipe is one instruction to the entire herd: press up and Pip, Bo, Moss and Zuzu all try to take one step up at the same moment. Put every animal onto its own spot and the board is solved.
Then how do they ever separate?
Walls, and each other. A wall stops whoever reaches it first; the one behind stops against that animal rather than passing through. So a single swipe moves part of the herd and not the rest, and a gap opens. Opening the right gaps in the right order is the puzzle.
Which spot belongs to which animal?
Every spot carries a faded picture of the animal it belongs to, so you can read it straight off the board — and the shapes differ, not just the colours, so it stays readable in greyscale and with colour-blindness. The pairing is listed under the board too.
The new rules keep catching me out.
They are meant to, once each. Mud keeps whoever steps into it until the next swipe. Sleepers do not move until another animal bumps them awake. A bridge holds for exactly one crossing. A plate holds a gate open only while someone stands on it. The autumn wind pushes everyone one more square after your swipe has finished. Ice does not stop you at the first wall — you slide. At night the fog hides every square more than a step away from the herd, and the wolf moves one square toward whoever is nearest each time you move. Each chapter opens with a short note naming its rule before the first board.
I am stuck.
Press HINT. It solves the shortest remaining route from exactly where you are standing — not from the start — and names the next direction. If the position can no longer be won at all, it says so plainly instead of letting you wander: undo, or restart the board.
What are the crystals for?
A hint costs one crystal. You start with three and you earn more by playing: one for solving a board for the first time, one more if you match the shortest solution, and two for the Daily Herd. Crystals never block progress — with zero crystals you can still play every board you have unlocked; you just cannot ask for a hint until you have earned one. If you buy the unlock, hints stop costing anything.
Is my score compared with anyone else's?
Two different things, and they are easy to mix up. The "best possible" number on a board is not another player — it is the shortest solution that exists for that board, proved by the game itself before it shipped. Matching it means nobody could have done it in fewer moves.
Separately, there is a leaderboard, and it is optional: Settings → Leaderboard opens Apple's Game Center and posts your total stars. If you never open it, nothing is ever posted and no account is involved. Game Center is not required to play any part of the game.
Buying, restoring, and what is free
What costs money?
The first 15 classic levels are free, and so are the whole Spring chapter of the new rules, the Daily Herd and challenge codes. One payment opens the other 221 classic levels, the five remaining chapters, Endless, Reverse, the level editor and hints without limit. It is a single purchase — no subscription, nothing consumable, no lives and no crystals for sale.
I paid before and I am on a new phone.
Settings → Restore purchase. (It is also on the unlock screen itself.) Apple remembers the purchase against your Apple ID, so it comes back at no cost. Your level progress is a separate thing and lives only on the device — it does not transfer.
The unlock screen says it is not available.
That means the app could not reach Apple's purchase system — usually no connection, or Apple's service being briefly unavailable. Nothing has been charged and nothing is locked that was not locked before. Try again later; the free levels keep working meanwhile.
Your device and your progress
Does it work offline?
The game does, entirely. Every level, the hint solver and your progress are on the device, so aeroplane mode changes nothing about playing — and there are no ads.
Two things need a connection, and both are Apple's rather than ours: the unlock (Apple has to take the payment and tell the app you own it) and the leaderboard, if you choose to open it. Once the unlock is recorded it works offline like everything else.
Will I lose my progress?
Progress is stored on your device. Deleting the app deletes it, and there is no account or backup to restore it from. Your purchase is the one thing that survives, because Apple remembers it.
Sound or haptics are not working.
Both are switches in Settings, and both are on by default. Haptics only appear on devices that have the hardware, so the switch is hidden if yours does not. If the switch is on and you still hear nothing, check the ringer switch and the volume, then write to us with your device model.
